Glen Anthony Doherty was the second of three children born to Bernard “Ben” Doherty, now of Charlestown, Mass., and Barbara Doherty, now of Woburn, Mass. Doherty and his siblings grew up in Winchester, Mass. He was always a hard worker and extremely responsible. After high school he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona.
Glen doherty navy seal family photos At the Snowbird resort in Utah, where Glen skied many years ago, another group of friends dedicated a particularly challenging run in his name, spreading the rest of his ashes on what is now known as “Glen’s Run.” In the wake of Glen’s death, his family and friends launched The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation, affectionately known as GDMF.His athleticism also led him to become a triathlete during this period. He spent a few years enjoying nature in the mountains of Utah, where he made a number of lifelong friends. He was an excellent cook and outstanding athlete.
A desire to push himself and to use his talents to make genuine change in the world led him to join the Navy SEALS in His team responded to the USS Cole attack, among other missions.
In , he got his knees reconstructed and was originally planning on exiting the military when Sept. 11 happened. After that he participated in two tours of the Gulf War, as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was peeled from his unit for sniper duty for several days, and then returned to his team before the taking of Baghdad.
In , he exited the SEALS, but remained focused on the region through private-security contracting work that generally took him to the region in a pattern of about three months overseas and a month or two back home.
Tyrone woods navy seal To keep Doherty’s memory alive, his family established the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation (GDMF), which provides scholarships to members of the special operations community to help them transition back into civilian life. Doherty’s friend, Sean Lake, also founded BUBS Naturals in the late Navy SEAL’s memory. The company helps fund.He worked for peace and security in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and elsewhere.
He wrote a book on sniping, 21st Century Sniper: A Complete Practical Guide, with his friend Brandon Webb. His way of making everyone around him feel special and loved came from the fact that he genuinely looked up to all his friends, always seeing their greatness in a way they sometimes wished they could see themselves, and from the fact that he felt for them the purest and most loyal of love.
Glen was killed on September 11, during the attack on the American embassy in Benghazi, Libya.
He was defending Ambassador Christopher Stephens at the time of his death.
Glen was honored at the Travis Manion Foundation First Annual West Coast Golf Tournament. His long term girlfriend, Shannon Shepherd, attended the Survivor Summit Expedition in August Glen was honored through service during the Travis Manion Foundation Kentucky Expedition.
